A complex-systems approach to project development

Low-carbon projects are systems problems. A technically attractive component can still fail if it is incompatible with the client’s operating model, infrastructure, economics, regulatory environment or implementation capacity. SystemZero therefore evaluates projects through six connected perspectives.

Technology

Is the technical concept credible and mature enough for the intended application?

We examine technology readiness, performance evidence, scalability, integration requirements, interfaces, utility demands, safety considerations and the distinction between demonstrated and claimed capability.

Organisational readiness

Can the organisation govern, operate and support the proposed system?

We assess responsibilities, decision rights, internal capability, specialist support requirements, operating-model implications and the capacity needed to progress the project.

Commercial viability

Can the concept create a viable business or investment case?

We consider capital and operating cost drivers, energy and feedstock exposure, revenue assumptions, offtake dependencies, customer value, procurement models and sensitivity to uncertain inputs.

Implementation planning

What must happen, and in what sequence, to move from concept to operation?

We define work packages, interfaces, decision gates, permits, partnerships, infrastructure dependencies, pilot requirements, scale-up logic and fallback pathways.

Decision support

What evidence is needed to decide whether to proceed?

We translate multidisciplinary findings into clear choices, explain which conclusions are robust or fragile, and identify the next evidence required before further capital is committed.

Risk and interdependencies

Which assumptions and interfaces could prevent success?

We identify technical, commercial, regulatory, operational, delivery and organisational risks, and use the findings to shape strategy and sequencing rather than produce a static risk register.

A structured, iterative process

The process is structured, but not artificially linear. Findings at each stage may require earlier assumptions or options to be revisited.

Technology-neutral and transparent

SystemZero does not begin with a preferred technology. Credible pathways are assessed against our client’s objectives, site conditions, economics and risk tolerance, including the possibility that the right decision is not to proceed.

Assumptions, calculated values and external evidence are distinguished clearly. Material uncertainties are carried through into the recommendations rather than hidden behind point estimates.
